What is Hearing Loss?

Our auditory system is a very important sensory system. It consists of the outer ear, the middle ear, the inner ear and the auditory nerve. Any disorder in one of these parts may affect our hearing ability.

Hearing loss exists when there is diminished sensitivity to the sounds normally heard. A person may be said to have a certain degree of hearing loss if he/she can only hear sounds of high intensity (over 25 dB in general). Different degrees of hearing loss will have different impacts on communication, which will affect a child’s speech and language development, communication skills and learning ability.

Deafness

Deafness is defined as a degree of impairment such that a person is unable to understand speech even in the presence of amplification. In profound deafness, even the loudest sounds produced by an audiometer (an instrument used to measure hearing by producing pure tone sounds through a range of frequencies) may not be detected. In total deafness, no sounds at all, regardless of amplification or method of production, are heard.
